PSP2023 – First Look

First Look at PaintShop Pro 2023

PaintShop Pro has been my preferred photo post-processing editor for many years. The new version, PaintShop Pro 2023, was recently released and I promptly upgraded.

The tool keeps its familiar interface and has added a number of new features. This post is just a quick first look – mainly to let my readers know that the new version is now available.

The way I use PSP is to drag a photo file to the icon on my desktop. PaintShop Pro opens with the file. Using a raw file (Nikon NEF file) now offers three options for the initial conversion.

The options are the AfterShot Lab, the Camera RAW Lab, and “Automatic Decoding”. I chose the Automatic Decoding option for this demo. The other tools will be topics for future posts.

The photo is an old, underexposed beach scene. I opened the histogram to show you the condition of the photo. You can see that it looks too dark in its initial state.

PaintShop Pro has a neat tool accessed with the Enhance Photo option in the menu bar. One of the options in that tool is …Smart Photo Fix. That tool analyses the image and presents starting adjustments. There are sliders for refining the image. I accepted the default settings to demonstrate how effective that feature is.

Note how nicely the underexposure was automatically corrected. The suggested image was not further adjusted, and I immediately exported it. Here is the photo.

Not bad, wouldn’t you say?
