Testing Topaz Labs Gigapixel AI 8.3.3
An old photo I came across when looking for something else seemed like a good candidate to do a quick test of the latest version of Gigapixel.
The photo shows a young lady behind the counter at a McDonalds restaurant. She moved just as the photo was taken and is blurred in the image.
Here is the original:

I made a couple of crops to illustrate how Gigapixel deals with images. Its biggest feature is “Face recovery”.

It doesn’t so much recover faces as invents a face that meets the geometry and colorization of the original.
Take a look:

Since I did a couple of crops here is a closer look:

Notice that the face looks very well “recovered”. The area below the face not at all.
Here is a quick look at how Topaz Labs Sharpen AI handles this same image:

Not nearly as clean a face, but a much better job overall.
One more try. The sharpened image done in Gigapixel.

Better but there are artefacts, especially in the eyes that didn’t work out so well.
My thoughts about Gigapixel after this quick look: A useful tool for many occasions.
Sadly, it also goes deep into creating imaginary versions that embellish and add frills that are not present in the original – not my cup of tea. Fortunately, those are “optional” at present.
